Dr. Eli Selig is a brilliant robotics scientist and the head researcher responsible for Zeta's creation. However, since he retired from the Zeta Project he's been a very hard person to find; Zee and Ro spend ninety percent of their time just trying to track him down. For Zee to effectively win his freedom he has to prove that his free will was not the doing of terrorists- only his creator can corroborate this.

Selig has been seen several times in the last two seasons but fate always seems to intervene before he and Zeta can be reunited- and the few times they have been in each others' presence it's never ended particularly well. Selig is a very busy man- constantly working on one project or another- and while he'd probably be thrilled to know that Zee values peace just as much as his creator, he's too preoccupied with current problems to see that his greatest piece of work is following him around the country, seeking his attention.

In "Change of Heart" Zee learns a lot about family structure and emotional ties; although Selig isn't exactly what you'd call a 'fatherly' figure, he is Zeta's creator and makes up a very big chunk of his origins. Zee isn't just looking for his freedom- he's looking for his humanity. Selig is the only one who can answer the questions Zee has about his existence.

However, at the end of Season 2- just as we think Zee may finally have reached success- Selig leaves us all hanging again. In an earlier episode Zee discovered he had a chip in his head that wasn't part of his original design. For the first time, he felt unsure of his own innocence- for all he knew, the chip could very well be terrorist technology. In the last episode, "The Hologram Man", Zee was finally able to talk to the doctor for a moment (although Selig didn't know it was Zeta); Selig admitted that he had added a chip to Zeta's design without the government's knowledge or consent in hopes that it would allow the robot to think for itself and, possibly, choose peace. Learning this detail was a great relief (and victory) for Zeta. Selig also revealed his newest AI project- androids with polymorphic skin. This robotic advancement could greatly increase Zee's 'human-ness'.

But, unless there is a Season 3, we won't know. At the end of the episode, Selig's escape ship was shot out of the sky and crashed into the ocean. A synthoid hand popped out of the waves before the show ended but we don't know who's hand it was. Most fans think it was Andrea Donoso's hand; she was Selig's assistant and possibly a synthoid. If she survived, she may have been able to save her employer, too. In any case, Dr. Selig was the most mysterious character in the show and, if this is the end, he's left us one last mystery to figure out.
